TAX Refund Scam Alert

The IRS is warning taxpayers of a quickly growing scam involving erroneous tax refunds being deposited into their bank accounts.  Cybercriminals are stealing client data from tax professionals and filing fraudulent tax returns using the taxpayers’ real bank accounts for the deposit.

Once the refund is issued to the tax payer, the fraudster calls the recipient posing as an IRS debt collector, demanding that the money be sent back to the IRS electronically.

The IRS does not contact taxpayers by phone to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail a bill to any taxpayer who owes taxes.

If you feel you may be a victim of this scam you should contact us at 978-249-3200.
